Terramycin inhibition of gluconate oxidation by Escherichia coli.

چکیده
The mode of action of "terramycin" (oxytetracycline, Pfizer), has not been described in detail, although numerous investigators have shown that the antibiotic exerts an inhibitory effect on oxidative mechanisms. Terramycin inhibition of the oxidation of Krebs cycle intermediates by Escherichia coli was rieported by Wong and Ajl (1953). Similarly, Ajl (1953) observed the terramycin inhibition of microbial oxidation of substrates which participate in terminal respiration. Glutamate oxidation inhibition was demonstrated by Karp and Snydei (1952), in murine and epidemic typhus rickettsiae. Terramycin and "aureomycin" were also shown to disrupt oxidative phosphorylation systems in rat mitochondria (Loomis, 1950). This study was initiated in an attempt to define the site of terramycin activity on oxidative reactions in Escherichia coli.

Action of some substituted anthranilic acids on Escherichia coli.
Rydon (1) has found that 4and 5-methylanthranilic acids inhibit the growth of Eberthella typhi and that this inhibition is reversed by anthranilic acid, indole, and tryptophan. He concluded that the two methyl compounds interfere with the synthesis of tryptophan at the stage of anthranilic acid. Interruption in the conversion of anthranilic acid to indole in Escherichia coli, caused by chloromy...
متن کاملRole of glucose in enhancing the temperature-dependent growth inhibition of Escherichia coli O157:H7 ATCC 43895 by a Pseudomonas sp.
Growth of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strain ATCC 43895 was monitored at 5, 10, 15, and 25 degrees C in both pure and mixed (1:1) cultures with a gluconate-producing Pseudomonas sp. found in meat to evaluate the effect of the absence and presence of 1% glucose in broth on temperature-dependent competition. The number of colonies of the Pseudomonas strain exceeded 9 log CFU/ml under all conditions ...
متن کاملSequence analysis of the GntII (subsidiary) system for gluconate metabolism reveals a novel pathway for L-idonic acid catabolism in Escherichia coli.
The presence of two systems in Escherichia coli for gluconate transport and phosphorylation is puzzling. The main system, GntI, is well characterized, while the subsidiary system, GntII, is poorly understood. Genomic sequence analysis of the region known to contain genes of the GntII system led to a hypothesis which was tested biochemically and confirmed: the GntII system encodes a pathway for ...
متن کاملEvidence for an electrogenic 3-deoxy-2-oxo-D-gluconate--proton co-transport driven by the protonmotive force in Escherichia coli K12.
Evidence is presented indicating that the carrier-mediated uptake of 3-deoxy-2-oxo-D-gluconate and D-glucuronate in Escherichia coli K12 is driven by the deltapH and deltapsi components of the protonmotive force. 1. Approximately two protons enter the cells with each sugar molecule, independent of the sugar and the strain used. 2. In respiring cells, the magnitude of the pH gradient alone, as m...
متن کاملModified Vero cell induced by Bifidobacterium bifidum inhibits enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 cytopathic effect
Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), such as E. coli O157:H7, are emerging food-borne pathogens worldwide. This micro-organism can damage the epithelial tissue of the large intestine. The cytotoxic effects can be neutralized by probiotics such as Bifidobacterium bifidum. Probiotics are viable cells that have beneficial effects on the health of the host. The preventing activity of B. bifid...
